Leake Academy
Sports
Sports have always been a large part of the tradition at Leake Academy. Leake provides many areas of competition that will encourage students to remain healthy and to develop the concept of teamwork. The body is an instrument just like the mind,  and it too needs to be pushed and challenged.

The 2008-09 gridiron Rebels cashed  in on momentum gained over the last few seasons.  The Rebels have been to the playoffs 5  of the last 7 years, last year winning their second District Championship in a row.  The Rebels finished the regular season with a record of 7-5,  playing in the first round of the AA  playoffs. The 2008 Junior High won the District Championship.  "Leake Academy has a good group of seniors this year," says Coach Pickens.

The Rebel basketball team completed  their thirty-ninth campaign in the MPSA.  During these  years, the Rebels have compiled a record of 953 wins and 327 losses.  They have claimed 17 District Championships, 6 North or South State Championships, 8 State Championships, 2 Over-all State Championships, and 1 Southeastern Regional Championship.  The Rebels are coached by Phil Shepard who is beginning his twenty-ninth season in the coaching profession--twenty-four of which have been here at Leake Academy.  Last year the Leake Academy Rebels had a record of 21 wins and 11 losses  and won the North State AA Championship.

The Leake Academy girls basketball program began in 1970 and is now the "winningest program in the MPSA with 1170  victories and only  202 losses", 1046 wins and 169  losses of which have been with Coach Doyle  Wolverton. The Rebelletes have also won 7 North Half Championships under Coach Wolverton. The Rebelettes have been crowned District Champions 25 times, Regional Champions 7 times, State Champions 11 times and Overall Champions 4 times. Coach Wolverton won his 600th Junior High game on January 8, 2008, against Manchester. The Junior High record is now 600 wins and 50 losses.

The Diamond Lady Rebels are led by three seniors, one junior, and three sophomores with eleven players in grades 6-9.  The future is certainly bright for LA softball.  We are currently ranked #5 in the state with a record of 14-1.  We are district champions and will begin north-half play September 26.

"Right now we are in the process of upgrading our baseball field and facilities.  Since the end of last season, we have put a new sprinkler system down on the playing field.  Also we have built a new press box and put up a new backstop with a brick wall and black net.  A concrete pad has been poured for seating behind the home plate area.  The upgrading is still ongoing with a new home dugout to be built and improvements to the visiting dugout.  Also new fencing will be put between the backstop and dugouts on both sides of the field.  The road by the baseball field has been reworked to provide more space by the field.

"First of all, we would like to thank everyone for his hard work and donations which have made this project possible!  This will not only benefit our players and coaches but will also add to our gameday atmosphere for both Leake fans and our visitors.  We are all very excited about our new facility and the upcoming season.  Go Rebels!"  Coach Josh Ray

Tennis

After the most successful year for the young tennis program that included a district, North State AA, and State AA title in Girls doubles, Coach Jones is expecting even greater results this year for the entire program. With most of last year's team returning and the addition of Niels Carstensen from Germany, the Rebel netters are in hopes of bringing home even more titles in 2010. We move into a new conference that will include perennial powerhouse Lamar, along with Hillcrest Christian, Canton, and Simpson. The increased level of competition combined with greater experience from the Leake players should prove to provide us with an exciting year of tennis. As soon as the schedule is completed we will post it on the website.

The 2009-10 Rebel linksters will be trying to continue the momentum gained the last six seasons.  The Rebels have qualified for the State AA tournament the last six seasons.  The 2006-07 team won the  North-Half AA Tournament and placed second in the State AA Tournament.  The 2008 linksters won the State AA Championship and the North State AA Championship.
